YouTube (How to use videos as a tool in teaching and learning)

Today we learn about YouTube. This is a video site that available to everyone. We could access it for free. There are a lot of videos on YouTube such as movie trailers, full movies, educational videos, music videos, and many more. YouTube site is a useful medium for teachers that it could be used as a teaching material in classroom. I think it is effective because students love watching videos like cartoons, comedy, and etc. It could draw their attention to focus more to the activities in the class. They would participate in every activities too if it is fun. They also would gain knowledge and improve their language proficiency at the same time.

In class today we were divided into three groups. Our task is to find a video and ways to use the video for the purpose of learning. We chose this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgjDSfbB2ok

Students would watch the video and give their own opinion about the video. They also could create their own plot and the ending of the story in the video. It is actually enhancing the students’ thinking skill and also encouraging them to be imaginative.

Negotiation and decision making skills

            Zapdramatic website (http://www.zapdramatic.com/dramas.htm) exploring gave me a rare experience that I learn how to negotiate and to make a decision on my own since my decision in life is always being influenced by others. There are 3 free videos that could be explored without registering as a member of the website. Throughout the videos, students as in me would sharpen the listening skill and learn communication skill at the same time. We would enjoy it since it is stimulating our senses like visual, listening, and others. It is quite challenging but I found it interesting.

            While watching the videos, we would reach to the certain parts that needed us to make a decision. Then the decision we made would influence the storyline and also the continuity of the story. I just realized that the decision making needs thinking process because we had to consider the options given, the consequences of every option and etc. We could rewind the videos in order to succeed till the end but in real life we obviously could not travel back in time. So we should not rush to decide for something especially when it is related to our future.

            Other than that, we could learn the negotiation and communication skills. We had to deal with people of different character and personalities in the videos as in our life. The ways of communication among people with different standards, character, personalities, situation, and others are differ from each other. We need different approach towards normal people compared to the mentally ill people.

MY MEMORY OF LOVE

Jack Frost

I could smile now since i got my memory back. My little sister’s face kept lingering in my head. It is enough to make me enjoy my daily life. Our childhood was really wonderful. The past memories about my family, friends, and other people came flooded my mind. I felt really good! But there is something weird happen to me these days. I felt lonely. Very lonely! It is not that i do not have friends but...i have been alone for hundred years!

The other guardians are really good to me. Sometimes i went to visit Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, Sand Man, and Tooth Fairy. We hang out together, talking till late at night, and feasting altogether. These are wonderful times that i could never forget. We are different and yet we are so similar. We all love those cute kids. We protect them since we are the guardians.

Back to my story, i hardly sleep nowadays. When i close my eyes, i saw an image of a girl. I could not grasp it because it is blurry. I kept thinking about that. I have all of my memories but this one i forgot what it is. Who is that girl? Surely she was not my little sister.

I could get a headache because of this girl. Who is she? I wanted to ask the other guardians but they already had many problems in their hands. I do not want to trouble my friends in any way. So, today i decide to take a walk at the garden. There are not so many people. There are a group of girls that are chattering while walking to school. I looked at them and i saw ‘her’. She was looking straight at my direction. That moment i remembered everything.

We were best friends. We grew up together and understand each other but i loved her. That was my deepest secret. I just could not find courage to blurt it out. Not even incidentally. Then one day she introduced me to her boyfriend and i could not react well to the situation. Bit by bit, i built a wall between us even though i missed her so much. She kept chasing me with her tears and questions but i just could not face her. I was a coward.

That girl resembles her a lot. I came again today and i saw her. She was sitting under a shady tree. I was wondering, was she reborn? So, i kept coming here, staring at her, protecting her all the way. Without knowing, it brought smiles to my stone face.

            My life is stressful. My parents are always busy with their works. I am lonely because i am the only child. But i have a secret too. I have a special ability to travel through times. A few years ago, i went to the past hundred years ago and i saw this little couple. They are playing by themselves. I was startled because that girl resembles me a lot. Looking them happy together just appease my heart. When they are together, i felt a strange feeling in my heart. They had a sad and tragic ending. The boy died and the girl followed just a few months later because of strange disease.

            A few days ago, i felt that strange feeling again. I looked around but i saw nothing. Unfortunately, the feeling did not left. I am sure that i felt ‘his’ presence somewhere around me but that is impossible. He died hundred years ago! Am i being paranoid? Am i thinking too much? I am here again today, sitting by myself under the shady tree. I felt watched by someone but there is no fear. I could feel the cool breeze engulfed me but inside i felt warm. Somehow i felt protected. I wonder, was he really dead?

i like the story but it is not really funny since i did not even laugh. maybe the story would be more interesting if the story is longer. the characters could be developed more with interesting encounters between Jack Frost and Alice.

Comment on writing relay activity

Writing relay is an activity that involved two or more people. They would be given the title or a few sentences. Then they have to write a story based on the title or the opening sentences given. They do not have to finish the story on their own. They have to write the story as much as they could in the limited time and they have to pass it to their friend to continue the story and pass it again to another friend to complete the story.

This activity is really fun because we could write anything we want in order to complete the story. At the same time, it is also challenging because we had to continue our friends' stories as well. It is good for students in learning language because this activity force them to think fast and write at the same time. This activity is applicable to students in primary school, secondary school, and also at the university level. Well, this activity is actually new to me but i enjoy it very much.

Review on quia website

Quia website is a website created for teachers and instructors to come up with their own activities for their students. Many activities like quizzes, games, and etc could be created by teachers and explored by students. Students of every level could find that this website is really useful to improve their English language skills. Other than that, this website could be used by teachers of other subjects too like science, mathematics, history, and many more.

This is an advantage to teachers and students as well since they could turn to this website to study every subject anytime and anywhere. Students would gain a lot of input from this website even while having fun by themselves. They would not be pressured to finish every exercises in limited time. They also could do the same exercise over and over again till they satisfied with the result.

Quia is better compared to Neko website because the activities are unlimited with many subjects. Thus Quia is suitable to every level of students too.

Comment on Neko website

Neco website is quite interesting and catchy with the using of animations. This website is mostly for english language learners. There are a lot of sections that can be explored on this website. One of them is pronounciation section. This section provides sounds. The students have to listen to the sounds and write what they have heard. It is fun and suitable for students but the speaker uses accent. Malaysian students especially would have difficulty to perceive the words correctly.

Then in the messy room section, students have the opportunity to make sentences in grammatical order. This is good that they would learn to make correct sentences and at the same time they would learn grammar as well.

Other than that, i like literary writing the most because students could do creative writing there. It is a good practice for writing to students and they could share thoughts with the other people too since everyone could read the writings.

However i still think this website is not really useful to the students because the activities are very limited. The activities available are fun but to some extent they would be bored.
